Obtaining A New Passport To Cancun Is Probably A Good Idea

That time off is so badly needed, but nothing could possibly be worst than making travel plans and not realizing that a passport to Cancun is needed until it is too late. People are getting all kinds of bad information about this right now and not being prepared can be the difference in having a great trip or getting to the airport and being forced to turn right back around.

The obvious answer is that since Cancun is in Mexico, and since Mexico is not in the U.S, then yes a passport would be necessary for a Cancun vacation. However, it was not until very recently that passports were necessary for travel to border countries, and even now they are not universally necessary. The type of travel dictates whether or not a passport is required.

New passport laws that were put into place in June 2009 have made things a bit confusing for many people. Prior to that date, a passport was not always necessary when traveling to US border countries. Up until that point, as long as a traveler had a valid driver’s license, they could pretty much head to countries such as Mexico and Canada at will.

Anyone that is now traveling out of the United States to areas such as Cancun will almost always have to have a passport now. The new laws require that all land, sea and air travel passengers have a valid US Passport to re-enter the United States when coming in from any destination. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule.

Travelers on cruises to certain international destinations are not required to carry passports provided that the cruise is deemed “closed loop.” A closed loop cruise is any cruise that starts and finishes in the same port or same port country. However, it is important to note that these closed loop exemptions only apply to cruises that begin and end in the United States, and only on cruises that visit certain international countries.

Approved international countries include: Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, and select Caribbean Islands. That being the case, a passport is not necessary for a closed loop cruise to Cancun. However, a closed loop cruise to South America would necessitate a passport.

All of these changes were made because of Homeland Security. It is no secret that border security was pretty lax, especially on the Canadian and Mexican borders. People were literally coming and going as they pleased. In order to secure the borders, these new passport laws were put in place to make it more difficult for people to get across the border into the United States.

In all honesty, while it may not be necessary to have a passport to Cancun, it is still a safe play to get one before any trip happens. A American passport application is the be all and end all of documentation of citizenship and on the off chance that difficulties were encountered coming back into the United States or entering Cancun, the USA passport is like Willie Wonka’s Golden Ticket.
