The DDR Museum is a novel and explicit museum and one of the most-visited museums in Berlin. Particular due to three major reasons.
The DDR Museum is the sole museum which focusses on everyday life in the GDR. The GDR was more than only asynthetic product of ideas and power - for thousands of citizens it was their existence. They got raised in this land, went thru the academic system, served in the’armed forces’, went to work, set up a family, furnished a flat, and raised the youngsters. It was feasible to lead an ecstatic life in the GDR. Sometimes, it was quite easily forgotten all about politics and ideology.
To get life lively across, that’s’s the most vital purpose of the exhibition. Approximately 16 million people lived in the GDR. Every life of each person was different. Still, there were some structures that each voter of the GDR had to adjust to.
Everyday life is lived history - only comprehensible if you as a visitor experience it, too. This is exactly what the exhibition of the GDR Museum Berlin enables you to do : Visitors are inspired to deal with the displays. You can rev the Trabis engine, explore a typical kitchen or lounge in authentic GDR movie chairs to watch a documentary. Various stations invite visitors to learn about subjects in a playful way.
